complete canvas
One continuous field of public-domain art. There is no grid and no next page: each
work is laid beside the pieces it most resembles, its edges feathered into theirs,
so crossing the field is a slow drift through colour, subject and century rather
than a scroll through thumbnails.
The field is drawn here in the browser, out of a visual-similarity graph of some
thirty thousand paintings, drawings and prints. That part needs JavaScript, and
JavaScript is not running on this page.
The rest of the site is ordinary text and does not need it. Every work stands on a
plain page of its own, linked to the eight it hangs nearest to, so
the catalogue can be walked from any starting point by
those links alone.
About Complete Canvas describes how two works come to stand
next to each other, names every collection the art is drawn from, and gives the
licence each one publishes under.
